The hosts of every World Cup have always managed to get past the first round, and South Africa will look to continue that proud record. Bafana Bafana come into this game full of confidence after upsetting Denmark 1-0 in their last friendly. Striker Katlego “Killer” Mphela scored the winner against the Danes with about a quarter of an hour left on the clock.

South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, who has seen his side go twelve games without a defeat, is expected to stick to his tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation for this important fixture. With Benni McCarthy not selected for the tournament, Mphela is expected to shoulder the burden of scoring alone. And judging by his recent form, the 25 year old Sundowns striker appears more than equipped to get the job done. South Africa have struggled to score goals- in last year’s Confederations Cup on home soil, they netted just twice, and both against New Zealand, who, with all due respect to them, are not in the same league as Bafana’s Group A opponents.

Mexico will also not be short on confidence, having beaten world champions Italy 2-1 in their last fixture. The goals in that fixture came from Carlos Vela and Alberto Medina. El Tri coach Javier Aguirre has experimented with a number of formations in the lead up to this tournament. Against Italy, he put Rafael Marquez and Efrain Juarez, normally defenders, into a three man midfield along with Gerardo Torrado. Should Aguirre opt to go with a similar lineup on Friday, Deportivo star Andres Guardado could find himself on the bench instead of starting on the left flank.

The goalkeeper’s spot is likely to be a tossup between Guillermo Ochoa and veteran Oscar Perez, with the former expected to get the nod. While South Africa have not really played quality opposition in the last few months, Mexico have had plenty of experience against teams ranked in FIFA’s top ten, having played England and the Netherlands too.

England will have the support of injured skipper Rio Ferdinand for their opening FIFA World Cup™ match against USA.

The central defender was forced to withdraw from the England squad on Friday with a knee ligament injury suffered in training only 24 hours after arriving in South Africa. Ferdinand's worst fears were quickly confirmed but the Manchester United star will be on hand to back his team-mates in Rustenburg on Saturday.

There is no timetable for when Ferdinand will return to England or if he intends to remain with Fabio Capello's squad for an extended period. But he will join former skipper David Beckham in being fully behind England's attempts to get their bid for glory during the next month off to a winning start.

Beckham is assisting Capello during the tournament although he is not engaged in any official coaching capacity. The injured midfielder has been seen on the training pitches at England's Bafokeng headquarters and also watched USA defeat Australia 3-1 in Saturday's friendly international in Johannesburg.

England have a virtual clean bill of health heading into this afternoon's practice match with the Platinum Stars. West Ham United central defender Matthew Upson was the only absentee from training on Sunday for the second successive day because of a high temperature.

But he had improved sufficiently to undertake some gym work and is expected to join in fully with the next training session with his team-mates. Capello will be keen to bed in Ferdinand's replacement alongside John Terry against the Stars, with Ledley King, Upson, the recalled Michael Dawson or Jamie Carragher all options.

The game could be too soon for Gareth Barry to return to action after his ankle ligament damage and he has been eased gently back into training by Capello during the past few days. With several other high-profile players already laid low by injury during the FIFA World Cup build-up, Capello will be keeping his fingers crossed England suffer no more setbacks.
